Why is Heavy Armor Bad Ass
Picture this; you've just killed a dragon. You rip off it's scales and plaster together makeshift armor and wear it as a symbol to your awesomeness. You walk around cities in the corpses of what everyone else is terrified of. Real men wear heavy armor.
What does Heavy Armor Affect
Heavy armor affects wearing heavy armor. Wearing any armor classified heavy armor is more effective if you're upped this skill. As with all other skills in Skyrim, increasing the skill allows you access to powerful perks (pictured right) that allow you to reflect damage back at the poor sucker who thought he would attack you.
Increasing Heavy Armor Skill in Skyrim
You gain skill in Heavy Armor by being hit while wearing heavy armor. The amount of damage you take or who hits you is irrelevant, you just need to be hit while wearing heavy gear. Anger some bunnies, piss off a fox, whatever.

Almost all the disabilities of wearing heavy armor (slower speed, heavier weight, louder sneaking) can be offset by spending perks within the heavy armor perk tree.
