Smithing : Elder Scrolls Skyrim
One of 18 skills in The Elder Scrolls Skyrim V : Skyrim, Smithing is a crafting skill which falls under the warrior play style.
Why is Smithing Bad Ass
Smithing is one of the most bad ass skills because before you even start your main quest you could be draped in armor black as night ready to absorb whatever Skyrim can throw at you. Finding materials means you are going to get a chance to practice your craft for profit or for personal use.
What does Smithing Affect
The Smithing skill allows you to create weapons and armor, improve them and even change raw ore into refined minerals. Smithing increases the quality of work. As with all other skills in Skyrim, increasing the skill allows you access to powerful perks (pictured right) that allow you access to recipes of newer and more exotic (more powerful) light and heavy armor. Of course crafting armor and weapons can't just be done while sitting in a tree, you need to find specific objects found in the world;
Anvil and Forge - Craft weapons / armor / jewelry
Workbench - Upgrade armor / shield
Grindstone - Upgrade weapons
Smelter - Smelt ingots from ore, from mining
Tannery Rack - Create leather and leather strips from animal hides

Increasing Smithing Skill in Skyrim
To increase your Smithing skill you merely need to use one of the previously mentioned world tools and do something. Improving a glass sword or crafting an iron dagger, it doesn't matter. Which leads to some pretty imbalanced gameplay as you can become a master smith by creating nothing but iron daggers all the way up to 100. I'm sure this will be addressed either officially or through mods.

Where does mining fit in?
Smithing uses ore that you have mined from special ore veins you find throughout Skyrim. Mining itself is an action you can make if you have a pickaxe in your inventory and you "use" the vein.

Smithing Tips
Before you sell items you have found within the world of Skyrim, improve them with the materials you have, or even buy them. Improving an item at the grindstone or workbench is an inexpensive way to level Smithing as well as increasing the value on the item you are going to sell.
